Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Review

Missing a few hours at the opening of CES 2014 in Las Vegas , where, among the many new features, there will be room for some previews as in the case of the new Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC 805 , already announced by the Californian chipmaker last November and based on a new and more powerful revision Krait architecture, here now at version 450, in combination with an Adreno 420 GPU which, according to the manufacturer should provide 40% more performance than the Adreno 330 of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 Review

805 Snapdragon SoC Mobile will be the first capable of ensuring an 4K Ultra HD total, ie not limited only to acquisition and playback of 4K video games but also with ultra-definition graphics and ability to make a stream on an external television through special Wi-Fi modules, always produced by Qualcomm. The chip also will also support several features advanced photo very interesting.

The colleagues at Engadget , during a visit to the headquarters of the chipmaker, in San Diego, had the opportunity to try, albeit briefly, the 805 Snapdragon Development Platform, an Android based tablet with 2560 x 1440 pixel display, dual camera with sensors and speakers with 3D surround sound effect support, publishing a first hands-on. In the four videos that you find here below you can see the various stages of this brief preview.

The first video shows the operation example of some advanced effects of the camera , which will be available on any device makes use of a Snapdragon 805. UbiFocus allows you to move the focus in a picture already taken, as is the case for the Lytro camera but how can even the recent Nokia Lumia 1520 but there are also OptiZoom , which focuses on a particular image, such as one written in the second floor, or ChromaFlash , which merges into a single image shots with flash and natural light get a better picture.

Also notable is the ability of the Adreno 420 GPU to stream to an external display up to as many as 8 3D feed at the same time, so as to enable you to get optimal stereoscopic viewing experience regardless of where we occupy in front of the screen. The Adreno 420 also now supports tessellation hardware, thus enabling to display more detailed games , since it is able to perform a greater number of geometric calculations without these go for another to adversely affect the performance of the CPU and RAM.

Finally, thanks to the support of the hardware coding 4K HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), the Snapdragon 805 can decode and stream high quality video without requiring too much computing power and thus consuming very little. In fact, the SoC also supports an enhanced version of Dolby Audio with surround effects vertical but of course this kind of experience does not lend itself equally well to the visual to be communicated via video. It seems, however, to understand that our colleagues at Engadget have remained in this case also pleasantly surprised.
